Visions 1999

Part Twelve

James reached for the comic book he'd written with Chris, who'd already signed it. I explained to him that this one was for me. "I'd rather you sign this, ‘cause it's something you did yourself, whereas a picture is just an image, and you can't do anything about how you look." Babble, babble, babble. (Just for the record, that is how I generally feel. Authors are usually the only autographs I collect. For actors, I'd rather have a picture I took myself as my memento. My one exception will be later in the story.)

"Alright, now please don't be offended," he said, "but last week I signed an autograph for a Tim, only would you believe it, he spelled it 'Thym'. Then about 8 people later there was another Tim, and I said, ‘So how do you spell that?' And the guy just looked at me, and said, ‘T. I. M.' I just know he was thinking Idiot actor guy. So, how do you spell your name?"

So I spelled it for him, and he wrote, Hi, Paula, then asked me, "Would you prefer ‘hi cutie' or ‘bite me'?" Oh, I was so tempted, but in the end reason won out – "My mom's gonna read this, I think I'll stick with ‘hi cutie'."

"Or I could put ‘bite me, cutie'," he murmured as he signed away. That actually would have been pretty cool, but he'd already finished.

At this point Nancy was nudging me pretty sharply. "Go ahead, take it out. Ask him. If you don't I will." She can be a pain sometimes. James looked up at me questioningly, so I sighed and started to pull it out of my bag. "Have you heard of the Beanie Spike?" Nancy asked as I pulled out my little rhinoceros.

"I'm not sure… Oh, yeah," he said as he took the toy from me. "I have heard about these."

"Would you mind signing it for us?" I just wouldn't give up.

"What, right here? Sure." He reached for the pen, and looked at the fuzzy animal, probably wondering how the heck he was gonna do this.

Right then the door next to me, the one to the lobby, opened, and I turned to glance at the new guest.

Apparently Nicky's plane was no longer circling Logan, because he was standing right in front of me.
