Part Five
I didn't get much sleep that night, as you can well imagine. Despite the fact that
James had declined – and ever so sweetly! – our invitation, this evil little devil deep
inside of me kept whispering, But what if he shows up anyway? He knows where it is...
(not to get your hopes up – it was still a James-less breakfast).
Also, Monique and I had organized this Bronzer Breakfast – what if no one showed up?
What if the restaurant messed up, or worse, lost our reservation? What if they hadn't gotten
my message the day before, cutting our expected attendance in half (from 20 to 10),
and then what if they made me pay for the difference anyway? Eeeks! I was a nervous wreck,
so there was no sleep for Polgara that night.
I set two alarms, just in case. And wouldn't you know it, my backup alarm didn't go off.
And of course, I was a mess about what to wear! My raw silk blouse had that smell that raw
silk gets in really (or even mildly) humid weather – I fully
intended to have my picture taken w/ James and Nick today, I didn't want to smell funny!
But in the end, it was my only nice-casual option. :( And of course, Little Sister's option
coincidentally looked exactly like mine, so for those of you who were with us, no, we
did not dress in identical white blouses and khaki shorts on purpose.
We picked up our two friends Stephanie and Rebecca, and headed for the Boston
Bronzer Breakfast at the Omni Parker House Hotel – and got lost. It wasn't on purpose!
But if you've ever been to Boston, you know that there are one-way streets everywhere,
and once you're on Tremont, you have no choice but to go all the way around the Common.
But yes, we made it, and we met OzLady and DoBoy and LouWho for the very first time.
Monique and her fiance were of course there – just a tad late *g* - as well as Rebecca's
sister Roberta. (not that a roll call is really essential to the
story, but this is for posterity's sake – whoever the hell posterity is). Breakfast
was wonderful – if you're ever in the Boston area, I highly recommend catching the
Sunday breakfast buffet at the Omni Parker House – it's beautiful. We talked about
(what else?) Buffy, and the L.A. PBP, and obsessions (Monkeys, Cheap Trick, uh,
Sinatra, … uh … you had to be there), and La Femme Nikita (and Roy Dupuis's backside –
poor Phantom Denis and DoBoy!). And for those of you who've never met LouWho, I
couldn't help but notice that there doesn't appear to be a shy bone in her entire
tall body anywhere – she had no problem wandering around looking for cream, and
coffee, and the bill…. I think she was starting to make the waiters nervous. *g*
We lingered for awhile, and then it was off to Visions! I'd like to point out here
that despite what you might hear from LouWho, Little Sister, or even DoBoy, there is
absolutely nothing wrong with my driving. Nobody told me DoBoy would be following me
until after my fourth or fifth swerv- I mean, turn, and yeah, okay, the light was
yellow, but he didn't seem to mind! Okay, the rotary may have been my fault, but
I firmly believe that you should show no fear when behind the wheel. So there.
Despite the expectations of some, we made it to the Bayside Expo Center with
all of our pieces intact, reserved seating tix in hand, only to find that James
had been moved – to 4:30, five whole hours away, with Chris Golden immediately
before, and Nick immediately after. Yee gods, that was a lot of time to kill! How
fortunate that all those vendors were just twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the
opportunity to take our money...
