Visions 1999

Part Fifteen

Chris started to explain, "He has this scar –"

"Hey," I interrupted, "I've read the Watcher's Guide. I know about the scar." (Whew! Damn good thing I'd re-read the section on James the day before!) James leaned against the table and yanked up his pant leg. I begged him to let me take a picture of it, but with a "No f***ing way!" he covered it back up. I tried to persuade him otherwise (one of those cases where I really regret not letting it go) but he got just like a little kid, crossing his arms, closing his eyes, and shaking his head, "No, no, no. It'll just end up posted on the internet." Well, yeah okay, he probably had a point there. In respect for his wishes not to have his injury exposed on the ‘net, I won't even give a description of it. Sorry. But it was a pretty cool moment.

Chris then said he had to go. (a hint to us, perhaps?) He shook James' hand, then Nancy's and mine, telling us it was good to meet us, and I was thinking, that's right, we only met yesterday! It seemed like we'd known each other a lot longer.

Chris left, and I turned to shake James' hand goodbye. "Oh, no," he said, "you get a hug!" And he wrapped his arms around me and gave me a big hug. (*THUD*) Then he turned to Nancy and said, "And your sister's on the internet, she gets a big hug too." And he gave her a big hug. (god, I so love this guy!)

I thanked him for everything, and he said, "I'm just a lucky guy, I have the greatest job in the world."

"But it's not an easy job," I told him. "I've done the acting thing, well sort of, in high school, and in college, and I love it, I really do, it's so much fun, but I so suck at it! I have no talent whatsoever. It's not easy to make words sound natural. Your job is hard work!"

"Well, yeah, it is hard," he said. "You have to be private in public." I didn't quite understand, so he explained. "Okay, out in the wild, what is an animal's natural instinct when something is watching it, staring at it, or hunting it? To run. You're standing up in front of hundreds of people, and you have to fight that instinct to run, fight it and go beyond, to be all alone and private, and open yourself up and be vulnerable, in front of all those people." He went further into his advice, and I wish I could remember all of it, but that was the most important part, and it really meant something to him, so it really meant something to me too. I can't really explain it, but I think that was when he was really opening up to me. I think that was my favorite moment.

So we said goodbye, and we shook his hand, and we left the room.

And yes, I forgot to do the adjusting-the-clothing thing.
