There goes my New Year’s resolution

I resolved to post more here, but there I go, screwing it up again.

Anyway! Let’s see, what’s new…..
+My knee has been getting better, so I’ve been downgraded to PT once a week instead of twice a week.
+I’ve been eating out far too much this week. (but sushi! and Hurry Curry! all too yummy to just say no!)
+I’m excited about my upcoming trip to Florida for a conference. It’s being held at a “spa and resort”, which is squee-worthy enough, but then my coworkers and I are planning to drive down to Key West for the weekend, which should be fabulous, as I’ve never been there.
+There’s been drama at work, but it’s all pretty far removed from me, so it’s like watching tv–interesting, but easy to turn off.

Hmm, I think that’s all I’ve got. I’ll be back later if I think of anything else.

So, as I was saying, the good news is, Jack can swim

It was raining out last Saturday, so I had the door open for some air, and because I like the sound of the rain. I was AIMing with a couple of people when suddenly I heard the screen door get yanked off its latch. I jumped up and yelled, “Jack!” as I ran to the door, because unless it’s a home invasion (unlikely in a couryard-apartment complex in the middle of a Saturday morning), it had to be Jack. And sure enough, he had run out when he saw the stray, the same stray that he has little glass-separated battles with at the window every morning. Only this time, instead of stopping outside the door wondering where the fuck he was, he kept after the cat! He ran after her into the courtyard, where the stray made a sharp left through the other gate and around the pool towards the far stairs, with Jack in hot pursuit, and me shouting his name as I ran after them.

It occurs to me now that it’s a good thing Jack didn’t know that the flat turquoise stuff was water, because he probably would’ve ended up in the street chasing that damned cat if he hadn’t tried to short-cut across the pool. Fortunately, he can’t run across water, but he sure can make a splash! The surprised look on his face has he came up for air from the deep end of the pool was, frankly, hilarious, even in my panicked omigod-he’s-going-to-drown state of mind. I was just about to jump in after him when he started swimming for the side. Whew! I met him as he was pulling himself out, picked up his soaking body as I tried not to laugh, and carried him as far away from my own sorta dry body as I could, straight into the bathroom, where I proceeded to towel off the excess water.

He’s been particularly needy since then, jumping into my lap when I’m at my desk and demanding to be petted. Sadly, there’s no way to know if he’s learned a lesson from the ordeal, so until I can rig something to keep that screen door from popping open, I have to keep the door closed. I’ve been feeling claustrophobic ever since.

Syndicated

I’ve syndicated my blog (XML file is here), and trying to get it to format properly is, well, a pain in the ass. So far all that comes out is one big blob of text, with no line breaks. Grrrrrr! So, this entry is primarily a test to see if my latest fix did the trick.

And it now occurs to me that I haven’t shared my Jack story over here. Gah! What an oversight! Ok, stay tuned, the next entry will include the Jack story, wherein Jack learns he can swim!

Bumper Stickers

You know those stickers on the back of industrial trucks that say “Caution: Truck Makes Wide Turns” or “Caution: If You Can’t See My Mirrors, I Can’t See You”? Today, on an industrial truck, I saw this sticker: “Caution: I Drive Like You Do.” Does that seem wrong to anyone else?

Major Slacker, reporting in

I know, I promised to update again two weeks ago. Oh well.

So far, 2006 isn’t much better than 2005. This week alone I’ve managed to potentially screw up two lives and two friendships, and I wasn’t even trying. How’s that for talent? Although, to be fair, I also launched the redesign of JaneEspenson.com, the coolest part of it being the new blog authored by Jane herself. She’s already updated it twice, so you should go check it out and see what she’s all about.

In other news, I’m off the cane, and the knee is doing better, although it’s a bit twitchy today (maybe from the cold?). Watching the Patriots game was a horrific way to spend three and a half hours Saturday. Oh! And! My friend A finished her first book! Woo! Her agent is shopping it around and there are already two publishers interested, so keep your fingers crossed for her!

Also also, if your family, you might be interested in this: Before I left MA, I scanned in a few of the old black and white pics from before most of us were born. You can find them here, and if you can identify any of the people in the unmarked pictures, please let me know!
